Machu Picchu, Peru

The ruins of Machu Picchu (meaning 'Old Peak' in the Quechua language) were rediscovered in 1911 by archaeologist Hiram Bingham. From the early 1400's the Inca people certainly used the Andean mountain top, but legends and myths reveal that Machu Picchu was revered as a sacred place long before.
